Today is National Instructional Coach Day, when we honor the men and women who work with teachers to improve the quality of their lessons and the quality of students' education. These instructional coaches, some of whom are shown here, serve as mentors and role models, helping teachers stay fresh and use the latest techniques and technologies in their classrooms. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Mrs. Howell competed with her fourth-grade class at Pocahontas Elementary School during a math game focused on place value. The teacher and students took turns rolling a large dice and filling in the blanks in their respective six-digit figures to see who could end up with the largest number. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

A photo of a woman and text that reads: PLEASE Welcome New PCPS Employees Laura McFarland. Communications Liaison. My name is Laura McFarland, and I am ecstatic to be the division’s new communications liaison. The position represents a big transition for me as I have been focused on a career in journalism (primarily newspapers) since I was a freshman in high school. For the last nine years, I brought people the news as the editor of the Powhatan Today. About Me I have eclectic interests, some of which include hiking, quilting, reading, and the occasional retail therapy (in the form of thrift store treasure hunts). Despite years of claiming to only kill plants (mostly true), I have successfully kept a house plant named Stryker alive for more than a decade and just this year took up gardening using an old wood pallet.
Having clean schools is an essential part of making sure our students have a safe place to learn. Today is National Custodian Day, so we want to give a huge shout out to all of the men and women who work for HES, some of whom are shown here, and take care of our buildings both day and night. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Mrs. Timberlake’s third class at Pocahontas Elementary School works on assignments that teach them to celebrate what makes them special. Students made a statement and drew an illustration of their statements. Some of the responses included: It’s ok to like crab legs; it’s ok to have a lot of Squishmallows; it’s ok to like Hamburger Helper and not like cake; it’s ok to have a twin; and it’s ok to not play soccer. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

The Lunch Buddies Mentoring Program has been in place in Powhatan County Public Schools for the last 10 years. The goal of the program is to help foster strong relationships among our students and the positive adult role models in the community. Whether at any of our 3 elementary schools or our middle school, you would meet with a student once a week and ultimately act as another advocate for them. It can be anything from academic support to conversation, playing games, making crafts, and so much more. The program is planned to begin the first week of October and will last until mid-May, when SOL testing begins in our upper grade levels. If you are interested in participating as a mentor for the Lunch Buddies Program, we would be happy to have you! Please apply using the QR code or reach out to lunchbuddies@powhatan.k12.va.us for any questions.
