We are thrilled to welcome Ronald “Ron” Henley Jr., who will assume the role of Director of Transportation, effective November 1. With a wealth of experience in the field and a deep commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of our students’ daily commutes, Henley is poised to drive our transportation services to new heights. In his new role, Henley will oversee the daily operations, strategic planning, and continued improvement of our transportation department. In addition to the safety and well-being of the school division’s students and staff, the transportation facility is responsible for the care and maintenance of the county fleet of vehicles, which includes the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office and Fire and Rescue vehicles. Henley brings a proven track record of excellence in transportation management, most recently serving as the Assistant Director of Transportation and Maintenance for New Kent County Public Schools. His vision and dedication align with our division’s commitment to providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation solutions for the PCPS community. In addition to his leadership role in New Kent County, Henley has built an impressive career in logistics and transportation management. He served as the Fleet Manager for Curtis Contracting Inc. in West Point, Virginia and as the Fleet Manager for the County of York in Yorktown, Virginia. A proud veteran, Henley also served as a Logistics Officer with the United States Army, serving our nation for an amazing 26 years. Henley earned a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a Master of Science in Logistics Management from the Florida Institute of Technology. Superintendent Beth Teigen said she is energized by Henley’s vision to streamline the transportation department’s processes and improve efficiency through the use of technology. “I am also excited to hear Mr. Henley’s plan for strengthening the relationship between transportation and maintenance to optimize the productivity of the department,” she said. Henley said: “I am extremely excited about the opportunity to serve the students, staff, and families of PCPS. I believe my extensive background in logistics and leadership will help PCPS transportation to continue on its current glidepath of a more efficient, safe, and cost-effective organization.” PCPS eagerly anticipates the positive impact Henley will make, and we are excited about the future of transportation services under his expert guidance.
Dancing for a Pawsome Cause at Powhatan Middle School! The school’s student leadership team hosted a fantastic dance on Oct. 6, with profits going to a cause chosen by students. They voted overwhelmingly to support the Powhatan Animal Shelter and were thrilled to present Deputy Riviere with a check for $3,800 for the shelter. Powhatan County Public Schools kicks off its Let’s Pull Together Tab Collection today. Now through Dec. 11, bring your aluminum pull tabs to your child’s school. The tabs will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond, which provides a "home away from home" for families traveling to the Richmond area while their children receive medical treatment in local hospitals. By collecting the pop tops from aluminum cans and bringing them to RMHC Richmond, PCPS can help RMHC continue to carry out its mission of keeping families close. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

We are hopeful having collection boxes throughout the community will encourage more participation. Tip 2: Walking to the Bus Stop Walk young children to the bus stop or encourage children to walk in groups. There is safety in numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see. Practice good pedestrian behavior: walk on the sidewalk, and if there is no sidewalk stay out of the street. If you must walk in the street, walk single file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as you can. Stop and look left, right and then left again if you must cross the street. Do the same thing at drive -ways and alleys. Exaggerate your head turns and narrate your actions so your child knows you are looking left, right and left.
We love having the halls of our schools decorated in student work. Mrs. Garner and Mrs. Wasosky had their civics and economics students at Powhatan Middle School complete the “If you could walk a mile in my shoes” project, and the results adorn one of the upstairs hallways. Through the action of a committed group of youth with disabilities, the General Assembly officially recognized October as Disability History and Awareness Month (DHAM). The youth also developed this credo: Disability history education and awareness will promote positive attitudes in schools creating a culture of mutual respect, understanding, and equal opportunities for all. This month highlights the success that Virginians with disabilities have had reducing barriers they have faced to employment, healthcare, education and community living, while helping raise awareness of the ongoing contributions and achievements that they bring to the Commonwealth throughout the year.

Just a reminder to our middle school parents about this event happening today: Powhatan Middle School will host an evening of “Non-traditional High School Options” with representatives from the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies, Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology, Code RVA High School and the Powhatan High School/Reynolds Community College for Advanced College Academy Program on Oct. 9, 2023. The purpose of this meeting is to provide interested students and their parents with information regarding the curriculum, graduation requirements, extracurricular activities, as well as answer questions regarding the application process for each high school option. Although the application process is open to current eighth grade students, fifth, sixth and seventh grade students and their parents are also invited to attend in order to assist in course planning before they reach the eighth grade. The evening will kick off with a review of Powhatan County Public Schools’ participation in these schools as well as answer some of the basic questions students and parents have about student participation in these high school program options. Applications will be available beginning on Oct. 13 from Mrs. Haskins in the Gifted Services office (B210) and Mrs. Baldwin in the school counseling office. Applications will be available to students currently enrolled in Algebra I. Private and homeschool families seeking applications will need to schedule an appointment with Mrs. Haskins to come to Powhatan Middle School, provide proof of residency and pick up an application. Applications cannot be mailed. The deadline for eighth graders to submit an application is Dec. 1, 2023.

After an overview at 5 p.m., families can attend sessions on up to three of the options at 5:15, 5:50 and 6:25.
