students and teacher listening to a reading of "The Very Hungary Caterpillar" by Dawna Cooper from VDOE

Three PCPS schools had some special visitors on Wednesday. Dwana Cooper, Coordinator of Specially Designed Instruction for the Virginia Department of Education, and Leslie Murphy Brown, Program Specialist for VCU T/TAC, visited the schools to observe Powhatan’s out-of-the-box approach to inclusive programs.

They started and ended the day at Powhatan High School to attend the inclusive P.E. and Art classes. At Flat Rock Elementary School, they watched Ms. Fleming and Mrs. Ayers teach a structured literacy lesson about the sounds of y to their first graders. To round off their visit, Ms. Cooper read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” to our VPI preschoolers at Powhatan Elementary.

Thanks for dressing the part, Ms. Cooper, with your Hungry Caterpillar shirt and butterfly earrings!
