🌟Exams

All students are expected to attend school on exam days, regardless of their exemption status. Please note that the PCPS attendance policy still applies. Please find the daily and testing schedules below. Students who are not testing will continue instruction that focuses on enrichment activities emphasizing the 5Cs (Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Citizenship) as outlined in Virginia’s Profile of a Graduate. We’re looking forward to a great week of learning and growth!
In most cases, students are eligible to exempt their Semester 1 exams if they have 5 or fewer absences in a class during the first semester. Teachers will inform students on Thursday, December 12th, and Friday, December 13th, whether or not they are eligible to exempt their exams.
If students have specific questions about exemption criteria for particular courses (such as Dual Enrollment, Online Classes, etc.), they should reach out directly to their teacher for clarification.

🌟College and Career Readiness

During November underclassmen have had the opportunity to explore careers through MajorClarity, Seniors have met with their counselor to work on their plan for after high school and students were able to meet with representatives from work, military and college at the PHS College and Career Fair on Friday. Although November is designated as career month, career exploration is something that students should be actively involved in throughout the year in order to best prepare them for what comes next after high school. MajorClarity, teachers, counselors and staff are a great resource during this process!

🌟Graduation Requirements

CPR/AED/First Aid Training. This hands-on training will be offered on Monday 11/25 and Tuesday 11/26. Students currently in PE 10 will do this training during their PE class. Students that previously missed this opportunity or those that are in online PE 10, will receive a pass to attend the training. It is extremely important that students are present for this training. Reach out to Mrs. Holley in Counseling if you have any questions or concerns. For students taking SOLs in December, be sure you are attending remediation, get a good night's rest before the test day, be on time for testing and give it your best effort!

🌟College-Bound Seniors

Please watch your deadlines. Be sure you have already requested any recommendation letters for anything due by January 1st. Remember, if it doesn't get submitted with at least 2 weeks notice before we leave for break, it will not get done until we get back in January. Send your counselor your acceptance letters and financial aid award packages. You can forward the emails or send screenshots to your counselor. The 2024-2025 FAFSA is now open for all students, a little bit earlier than expected. Be sure to make an appointment with Ms. Wassmer to learn more about the financial aid process and begin filling out the form. Some financial aid does run out, so the earlier the better! Appointments can be made directly on her calendar here and she can be reached via email at powhatan@grasp4va.org.

🌟November is also Family and Community Engagement

November is Family and Community Engagement Month, and we want to express our heartfelt thanks to our parents, families, churches, and community organizations. Your support—whether through attending conferences, volunteering with Boosters, supporting PHS Athletics, or participating in events like The Fall Classic and College Fairs—makes a real difference for our students and staff. We’re committed to strengthening these connections and are excited to work with our Class Sponsors on new ways to get families involved.

🌟The AP exam payment window is now open for students enrolled in AP courses and wish to take the exam in May. Payment can be made online through SchoolCash or can be paid before school at the concession stand.

The cost of each exam is $99 except for AP Seminar.
AP Seminar exam cost is $147.
The deadline for payment is November 4.

🌟English Performance Assessments Dec. 5th; Make Ups on Dec. 11th

Sophomores will be completing the analytical component of their writing portfolio required for graduation on December 5, 2024. Students will be introduced to the essay prompt and have the opportunity to discuss ideas with their peers during class on December 3rd or 4th. During the testing session on December 5th, students will work independently to complete their prewriting, write their essays, and submit their work through Schoology.
Due to the importance of this assessment, please make sure that your child attends school for the introduction to the assessment on December 3 or 4 and the performance assessment on December 5. The make-up date for this assessment is December 11, 2024.

🌟Powhatan Christmas Mother Needs

The Powhatan Christmas Mother has asked the students of PMS to collect the following items through November 22:

Markers, card games, Holiday socks for middle school students, Journals, Deodorant, Chapstick, Lotion, Flashlights and Gel pens.
Sports Equipment Collection!
There will be a collection box in the main office. Thank you for contributing to those in need for the holidays!
