PCPS prepares students to thrive in a global community.

Empowering Today to Innovate Tomorrow.

Powhatan High School, home of the Indians, currently serves approximately 1,465 students in ninth through twelfth grade with 138 faculty and staff members. As Powhatan County’s only public high school, the current facility, located in the eastern end of the county, was opened in 2003. PHS is a comprehensive high school offering students the opportunity to develop both college and career readiness skills in its academic program offerings and the opportunity to excel in academics as well as extra-curricular activities.

Student enrollment in Advanced Placement, J. Sargent Reynolds and Shenandoah University dual-enrollment courses as well as Career and Technical Education classes has continued to increase, offering students the opportunity to earn college credit and industry licensure and certification while still in high school. Our JROTC program has been repeatedly awarded the coveted Honor Unit With Distinction Gold Star Award, the highest recognition given by the US Army to high school programs. At Powhatan High School, approximately 70% of our student body qualify as CTE completers, and over 70% cite plans to continue on to a four-year college after high school, with more than half of our students earning advanced studies diplomas.

The band, choir, and drama are regularly recognized and honored at local, regional and state competitions. The Fine Arts program excels both in and out of the classroom in visual and performing arts. PHS has been recognized for multiple superior ratings and festival championships, drama productions and participation in local art shows. More than half of our students participate in at least one of more than forty clubs which are exceptionally active in planning, organizing and implementing various student and community activities throughout the year.

Most notable are the philanthropic endeavors to include contributions to local food pantries, The Christmas Mother, Relay for Life, Stop Hunger Now and Invisible Children. Powhatan Indians sports teams have enjoyed a high level of participation and success, winning 103 district, 13 regional and 3 state championships, with 1 state runner-up just since relocating to the current facility in 2003.
