School Counseling

The counseling department coordinates a variety of special programs within our school:  orientation, character education, peer mediation, scheduling, and placement of new students.  We are also responsible for coordinating SOL testing as well as report cards.

Counselors also serve as liaisons among various groups of people that are involved in student success.  In our efforts to meet the needs of all students, we work with teachers, administrators, parents or guardians, students, and community members.

Students may request to meet with a counselor regarding academic, peer, or other concerns.  Counselors can provide repeated individual and group counseling services as time allows.  Group topics may include divorce, grief, social skills, anger management, and personal success.  Topics depend on the need of the current student population and are offered as time allows.  Parents who wish to meet with a counselor are certainly welcome and are encouraged to call the Counseling Office to schedule appointment times in advance.

At Powhatan Middle School we are Safe, Respectful, and Responsible.

Our Vision Statement: Powhatan Middle School students are unique individuals who achieve high standards with encouragement from the academic community. All students graduate college and career ready with a strong understanding of the positive impact they will make as a member of society in the 21st century. Every student has access to a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes self-growth through goal-setting and supportive relationships so that students can achieve their fullest potential.

Our Mission Statement: The mission of the Powhatan Middle School counseling department is that every student will benefit from a school counseling program that is student-centered and outcome-driven. The program provides academic and personal support as well as career development services that are necessary for students to become productive members of society in the 21st century. The counselors work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, parents, and the community to maintain high academic standards, increase safety and security, and invite every student to stay in school and reach success.

Opt-Out

In accordance with Powhatan County School Board Policy 6-27.1, parents have the option to limit or deny their child's participation in guidance programs. Should the choice to limit or opt-out be desired by parents, written notification must be provided to the school specifying the action desired. The notification may either be addressed to the school principal, the child's teacher, or to the school counselor.

Classroom Lessons

School counselors conduct classroom lessons and activities throughout the year that cover the three counseling domains: academic, personal-social, and career.  Specific lessons may include study skills, career exploration, bullying prevention, and character education.
