Flat Rock Elementary fourth graders’ STEM Day was out of this world!. The students showed their understanding of the relationship and movement of the sun, earth, and moon. They modeled and explained why we have the seasons, tides, and phases of the moon. Students explained what causes the seasons, including facts such why the tilt and the earth’s orbit around the sun causes our seasons. #wearepcps #teampowhatan
@backpacksofloveinc is holding a Food Drive through Feb. 23, 2024. Backpacks of Love, Inc. is a local charity that was formed to provide food for school children over the weekend. Children who need such food receive a small bag of food and snacks on the last day of the school week. Our partners at Backpacks of Love are asking for our help! They need food donations. Below is a list of what they need. Please bring donations to your child’s school through Feb. 23. National School Counseling Week 2024 (#NSCW24) is being recognized from Feb. 5-9, 2024, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Ms. Amorese’s fifth-grade class at Flat Rock Elementary divided into groups and rotated between three math stations – two small group stations focused on word problems and dividing decimals and a third group working on problems that reviewed previous skills. Are you a Powhatan grandparent raising a grandchild? Grandparents Raising Grandchildren is a weekly group offering support and resources for grandparents raising grandchildren. The group meets on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon at 3910 Old Buckingham Road. Learn how to process and navigate common challenges.
Powhatan County Public Schools highly recommends that families with smartphones download the free PCPS app and enable notifications. Powhatan County Public Schools is now accepting ECSE Preschool applications. Applications are available through Feb. 9, 2024. In-person screenings/play dates will be scheduled from Feb. 12-23. All children must participate in the screening and play date in order to be considered for this program. Mrs. McArtan’s fifth graders at Flat Rock Elementary School used a special tool to help with their social studies lesson on the causes of the American Revolution. The students created timelines that incorporated coding so Ozobots could then travel the timeline. This was a great collaborative activity. Instructional technology innovator Ms. Bentzen created the lesson for most of the FRES fifth-grade classes to make it different from a standard history lesson, and Mrs. Kilpatrick, K-12 history studies specialist, came to observe the activity and provide content knowledge. Mrs. McArtan said the students were highly engaged in the lesson. “It’s a great way to get back in school after the break, because that’s kind of tough,” she said. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

The Powhatan County School Board will hold its workshop at 4 p.m. today. The board will elect its leadership for 2024, but the rest of the agenda may be amended due to concerns about road conditions after 5 p.m. Any items on the agenda that are not heard will be added to a workshop and regular meeting on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
Due to weather and road conditions, Powhatan County Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Offices will be closed, and staff will not report. Any after-school or evening activities will be rescheduled. A decision will be forthcoming about the Powhatan School Board workshop and meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 16.
