Itโ€™s been a few weeks, but we had to share these first-day photos of the cuties Ms. Katie and Ms. Kim welcomed into their preschool class at Flat Rock Elementary. The first day was a huge success, and Ms. Katie said they are looking forward to an amazing school year watching these kids learn and grow. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Ms. Antosiak's seventh graders at Powhatan Middle School are charting success as they dive into data analysis. The kiddos explored the data cycle by collecting data online, creating a graph using that information, and then analyzing it. Some data found included last month's temperature, Flying Squirrels stats, and Taylor Swifts' age on the release date of each of her albums. Students worked together to create a stem and leaf plot, and then found measures of central tendency. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Flat Rock Elementary is fully living up to its name! It was decided this summer that the school should indeed have a flat rock. School staff reached out to the Powhatan Luck Stone site leadership to see if they could possibly make this happen. The Luck Stone associates carefully selected the boulder to donate, and on Tuesday, August 13, Darren Prince, plant manager, and long-time Luck Stone associate Randy McMasters delivered a beautiful boulder to FRES. It's a perfect addition to the school grounds and a great example of PCPS embracing the Family and Community Engagement goal of the divisionโ€™s Strategic Plan. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

For the first few weeks of the new school year, Pocahontas Elementary Schoolโ€™s littlest learners in preschool and kindergarten are focusing on a different color each day as part of their instruction. To help them learn their colors, all students and staff have been invited to dress in the Color of the Day. And POCA is definitely here for the fun! A special poultry guest (principal Samantha Martin) came to visit Miss Mortonโ€™s kindergarten class on yellow day. For red day, Mrs. Sengerโ€™s kindergarten class read โ€œClifford the Big Red Dogโ€ and made their own Clifford ears. The celebration of color concludes on Wednesday, Sept. 11, which is Patriot Day, when students are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

We peeked in on story time as Mrs. Schwartz read a book called โ€œSchool Dayโ€ to her kindergartners at Flat Rock Elementary. Afterward, she talked about activities the students did in the book such as reading, writing, playing on swings, waving, painting, and listening โ€“ all things her own students would do โ€“ to help them connect to the story. We love seeing students connect the dots between stories and their own lives to understand the power of the written word. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Sorry, we couldnโ€™t resist jumping on the trend. School buses are back on the roads in the morning and afternoon, and we want to make sure our students are safe on Powhatanโ€™s gorgeous but sometimes windy roads. So stop; itโ€™s the law! Virginia motorists must: โ€ข stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign when approaching from any direction; โ€ข remain stopped until everyone is clear and the bus moves again; and โ€ข stop whenever the bus is loading or unloading passengers, even if the lights and stop sign are not activated. If a school bus is on the opposite side of a median or barrier, motorists arenโ€™t required to stop; however, drivers should be prepared for students exiting the school bus and crossing into their lanes.

Itโ€™s eggs-periment time! It may have been the first week of school, but Ms. Brooks was ready to get her fifth graders excited about science from the get-go. The students soaked eggs in vinegar for two days and then took the new bouncy creations outside to see at what height they would break. This was a great lesson on process skills and matters of observation as well as just a fun and slightly messy time. For those who have never seen this experiment, the calcium carbonate shell undergoes a chemical reaction and dissolves in the vinegar. The acidic vinegar leaves the membrane that lines the inside of the shell intact. Some of the vinegar permeates the membrane due to osmosis, which is why the egg swells. The egg insides remain intact, and the remaining membrane is surprisingly strong and flexible, allowing the egg to bounce if dropped from a small height. What an eggs-cellent experiment! #wearepcps #teampowhatan

๐Ÿ“šโœจ It was a book-filled adventure in Mrs. Bartholomewโ€™s English 8 class at Powhatan Middle during her annual book pass! Youโ€™ve got to save Fred! This friendly (but not so bright) gummy worm took his boat out on the lake one day and forgot to wear his life preserver. Unfortunately for Fred, a strong wind caused his boat to capsize, leaving him stranded on top and the life preserver underneath. Fortunately, Ms. Duncanโ€™s second graders at Powhatan Elementary are problem solvers, and they worked in groups to come up with a solution to save the gummy worm. Ms. Duncan said this is a great activity for the beginning of the school year, because it focuses on team building, classroom community, problem solving, and communication. After the activity, the groups gathered on the carpet to discuss what they learned and how they managed to save Fred. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

A kraken taking down a ship? A school bus that is also a rocket? A turtle swimming above a swirling cosmos? The talent and imagination of our students is amazing. This recognition is a little overdue, but check out this amazing mural created in the upstairs hallway at the end of the last school year by students at Powhatan Middle School who wanted to leave their mark in a powerful and productive way. We had a lovely surprise this morning at the Pocahontas Landmark Center when local resident Karla Curtis dropped off the roughly 500 copies of โ€œThe Magical Place We Call School: Creating a Safe Space for Learning and Happiness in a Challenging Worldโ€ that she and her husband, Bob, are gifting to teachers, counselors, and other staff members in our schools. Author Kathleen Corley was the keynote speaker at this summerโ€™s admin training, Curriculum Close-up, and Mrs. Curtis said she hoped the book would help staff in their constant quest to create magical learning experiences for students. Experiences like this show why community engagement and building relationships are such an important part of the work we do at PCPS. #wearepcps #teampowhatan
