Educational Milestones

Powhatan High School SPEAR Robotics went undefeated and won first place at the Harrisonburg FTC Robotics Qualifier on Saturday.

Led by club sponsor Marcellus Beasley, the team stood out for having the only robot at the competition – and one of only a handful in the multi-state district – that could achieve a Level 3 ascent. This ability will serve the team well as they compete in the FIRST Chesapeake FTC Championships in Silver Spring, Maryland on Feb. 8.

PCPS receives VACO Achievement Award!

The joint meeting between the boards kicked off on a really high note when Dean Lynch, executive director of the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo), presented PCPS with a 2024 Achievement Award. PCPS was among 45 recipients across Virginia to receive this prestigious honor, which highlights excellence in local government programs. The award recognizes the efforts to develop a dynamic, in-house geography and local history curriculum for fifth graders, which was created after the division moved the Virginia Studies course to fourth grade, reducing the testing burden on fifth-grade teachers and students. The curriculum was primarily crafted by Toni Kilpatrick, former K-12 History and Social Studies Curriculum Specialist, with valuable contributions from retired specialist Carol Simopoulos. Mrs. Kilpatrick attended the meeting and was recognized for her hard work. The two women collaborated with the Powhatan County Historical Society, which offered resources and insights that enriched the curriculum to help bring Powhatan County’s history to life for students.

Moon Tree at Powhatan Elementary

Big news from Powhatan Elementary! We’re beyond excited to welcome our very own Moon Tree, a special tree whose seed traveled around the moon on NASA’s Artemis 1 mission! This incredible piece of space history is now planted on our campus, and we can’t wait to watch it grow. Check out the video to learn more about this out-of-this-world addition to our school!

Thank you so much to Manakin Episcopal Church for their generous donation of $3,500 to support students in need. This contribution helped cover school lunch costs for children from families who are struggling financially, benefiting both Powhatan Middle School and Powhatan High School students.

We are deeply grateful for your kindness and support of our community!
